Elizabeth Fahling understands profit and loss. She is an almost-college-graduate working toward her CPA. As a volunteer for Ward’s special needs ministry, she brings high value to the team. But she agrees that serving in this ministry adds as much value back to her life.
Elizabeth had an opportunity in her high school to work with disabled students. She enjoyed the experience, and so five years ago when she noticed a need for volunteers in the Ward Hand-in-Hand room listed in the newsletter, she gave it a try. She discovered that she loved the one-on-one time with the students, and once she began leading lessons, that it was a fun challenge to try to connect the lesson with each one. She loves that the students are in the Hand-in-Hand ministry for multiple years, and as a result she has made long-term connections with families. In fact, the Sunday we talked, she was heading to a high school graduation party for one of the students.
Elizabeth’s service in Hand-in-Hand is a huge ‘win’ for Ward Church. Bethany Crane, Director of Ward Special Needs, says: “Elizabeth is a gifted teacher whose smile makes everyone feel welcome. She has a quiet, patient spirit and her loyal dedication shows God’s kindness and faithfulness every Sunday. We love Miss Elizabeth, she is a blessing, and we couldn’t do Sundays without her!”
Elizabeth’s list of personal “wins” include being part of a sweet community of students and parents who lean on each other for support and help. She says, “It’s challenging to find ways to connect with the kids in this ministry. But the extra challenge also makes it more rewarding!”
