Did you know there are over 100 unique roles filled by volunteers each month? In this series, Cindy Ziemba will go behind-the-scenes, sharing the stories of individuals serving to lead generations to live and love like Jesus!
When life is hectic, most of us choose volunteer roles that are calming. Not Todd Ferrier. As backstage manager of WardKids FX: A Family Experience, the intensity of overseeing a team and making sure the live production goes smoothly is a good fit for how God has gifted him.
“I enjoy being a project manager, and this role is exciting. I build some props and set pieces for FX, but my bigger role is coming into Saturday night rehearsal and managing the team that moves everything on and off the stage during the Sunday morning production,” he says. Todd has to think through efficiency between scenes – he uses the analogy of “laying out firemen’s clothing, so they can dress quickly.” Todd has devised ways for large props to easily move on and off the stage, and is a master at quick clean-ups when things get a bit crazy – even when all the lights are off.
Todd and his wife Kathy have busy lives with three teens, but have consistently modeled serving for their children. One bonus of Todd’s work with FX has been the opportunity to volunteer with his kids, which research says is a powerful bonding experience that teaches valuable life skills. Todd has been with FX for eight seasons and has watched his kids grow as they’ve joined him in serving. His three children have worked backstage FX with Todd, and have also branched out into other areas of the production, including lighting and audio. Two of his teens are now on the Ward production team for worship services, and one is considering a future in audio production. The older two are also small group leaders in WardKids ministry.
When asked why Todd believes in the ministry of FX, he answered, “Family Experience brings God’s words to kids in way they can relate to. Kids have the opportunity to see Bible truths in action in situations that they can then apply to their lives. It helps parents talk to kids about spiritual truths.”
WardKids is sponsoring A Christmas Festival at Ward Church on Sunday, December 8, featuring two showings of FX at 9:30 and 11:00 am. Other activities will include cookie decorating, horse-drawn carriage rides, crafts, photo booths, a petting zoo and more! This is a great invitation and outreach opportunity. Volunteers are needed to help with all activities to create a welcoming and successful event. Sign-up to serve in a short time-slot (that still allows time to participate in all the activities with your family) at ward.church/festival.
