Did you know there are over 100 unique roles filled by volunteers each month? In this series, Cindy Ziemba will go behind-the-scenes, sharing the stories of individuals serving to lead generations to live and love like Jesus!
I’m guessing there are many band or orchestra members among us. You know who you are – you recall navigating through the music stands without tipping them, sitting on the edge of your seat, ready to raise your instrument, anxious that you are in tune. You also know the thrill of working with all the musicians to envelop the audience in beauty.
Angi Magnanti was one of those band kids. She played French horn through high school, college, and with community groups and now, she’s playing in Ward Church orchestra.
“Playing in our orchestra is the best of all my experiences. We are praising God with our instruments. I like to give back to God for what He has given me. I’m worshipping while I serve,” she says. “And we are so blessed with this beautiful sanctuary which creates lovely acoustics for music.”
Angi has been part of the orchestra since she started attending Ward in 2003. She has also volunteered for events like Football Sunday and A Christmas Festival, serves at the nursery welcome desk, and helps when she can with Days for Girls ministry. She loves that the orchestra is a multi-generational makeup of volunteers. There are musicians who have played their instruments for 4 or 5 years, and those who have played for over 50 years, but she says “We all learn from each other.”
The orchestra plays in the sanctuary on the third Sunday of the month, and rehearse the two Wednesday evenings prior. John Beresford, Director of Classic Worship, rehearses and directs the orchestra.
Does a piece of you long to be back in the band? Angi says “You’d be surprised what you remember! There was one member who hadn’t picked up her instrument in 25 years, and she has regained her skill. John is welcoming and gracious. Come try us out for an evening!”
