    New Sunday worship times:

    9 a.m. Traditional, 10:30 a.m. Contemporary
    Both services in Sanctuary

As announced during the 2021 Annual Meeting, starting fall 2021, Ward Church will shift to offering two different worship styles at separate times. Starting September 12, Sunday worship services will take place at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m.  The 9:00 service will be traditional. The 10:30 service will be contemporary. Both services will meet in the Sanctuary with Knox Hall being used for other family programming.

    Additional things to know:

    • WardKids and nursery programing will still be available for both services
    • Both services will be live streamed at ward.church/live
    • Rebroadcasts will be streamed at 2 p.m. (Traditional) and 4 p.m. (Contemporary)

What will the traditional and contemporary services be like?

The traditional service’s music style is a blend of beloved hymns and rich meaningful worship choruses. The choir, organ, and piano play a prominent role. Strings, brass and percussion instruments augment this worship style when applicable.  Historic creeds, prayers, and liturgies frame an experience designed to connect worshippers with the living God.

Gifted and diverse musicians lead updated hymns, classic choruses, and new songs during our contemporary service. Led by a band (with occasional appearances by our choir and orchestra), our aim is musical excellence devoid of showmanship. Historic creeds, musical variety, and a relevant biblical sermon form an eclectic mix designed to connect worshippers with the living God.

What if my preferred style is not offered at my preferred time?

People with strong music preferences will likely need to reconsider their schedule. However, many people will find they can be equally engaged at either service. You may be pleasantly surprised by your worship experience at your “less preferred” style. Both services will include old and new music. Both services will hear the same sermon. Both services will celebrate the work of God in our church and world.

Why two different styles? Why not one blended service for all?

We desperately want all people to connect to the living God AND we recognize that people connect with the living God differently. For some people, it is the sound of the majestic pipe organ that helps them open their spirit to God’s spirit. For others, it is more familiar instruments that help them sense God’s nearness. God wants the hearts of his people engaged with and inclined toward Him. By providing two distinct experiences, we hope to help more people express themselves to God in ways that make sense for them.

Why aren’t we using Knox Hall or the Chapel for worship services anymore?

Our current Sunday worship attendance numbers do not require three separate rooms for worship.  Our large Sanctuary can easily accommodate our congregation with room to grow. With Knox Hall now available, our Kid and Student ministries are free to creatively reclaim that space for Family Experience (FX) — returning in October — and other programs. Likewise, the Chapel can be used for Sunday groups and classes.

Why the slight shift in service times?

We hope by moving the first Sanctuary service 30 minutes earlier, we can better accommodate the folks who had regularly attended the 8 a.m. service in the chapel, while still maintaining a reasonable (i.e. not too early) start time for most people.

We believe the 10:30 a.m. service’s style and time slot will appeal to many of the new families and visitors who may wish to visit Ward Church.

Is the 8:00 a.m. Chapel service returning?

No. At least not in the near future. We hope our dedicated 8 a.m. Chapel group will be able to join those who will worship at 9 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

What if my Sunday group or class meets during my preferred worship service?

Check with your group leader. Some groups are changing meeting times this fall. If not, you may be able to find a similar group at another hour. Groups and classes are available at both 9 and 10:30 a.m.
